Brand guidelines are the rulebook for how your business looks and sounds. They ensure that every touchpoint, from your website to your business cards to your social media, feels like the same company. Here is what goes into them and why they matter.
What Brand Guidelines Include
Logo Usage
Your primary logo, secondary marks, icon variants, and rules for how they can and cannot be used. Minimum sizes, clear space, what backgrounds they work on, and what to avoid.
Colour Palette
Primary and secondary colours with exact values (HEX, RGB, CMYK, Pantone). Which colours to use where, and how much of each. Getting colour right is the fastest way to look consistent.
Typography
Which fonts to use for headings, body text, and accents. Sizes, weights, and spacing rules. This applies to everything from your website to your email signature.
Photography and Imagery
The style of photography and illustration that fits your brand. Colour treatment, composition guidelines, and examples of what works and what does not.
Tone of Voice
How your brand writes and speaks. Formal or casual? Technical or plain? This section ensures that your website copy, social posts, and customer emails all sound like the same company.
Why They Matter
Without guidelines, every new piece of marketing is a guess. Your social media manager uses one font, your printer uses another, and your website uses a third. Over time, your brand fragments and loses the consistency that builds recognition and trust.
With guidelines, anyone creating anything for your business, whether internal or external, knows exactly what to do. It saves time, reduces revisions, and ensures quality.
When You Need Them
If more than one person creates content for your business, you need brand guidelines. If you work with external agencies, freelancers, or printers, you need brand guidelines. If you plan to grow and hire, you need them before inconsistency becomes a problem.
Brand guidelines are included in our All-In package alongside your logo, website, and all brand assets. Learn more about our branding work.
